My general research interests are in the application of quantitative MRI techniques to better understand microstructural changes in the brain, and how these are associated with healthy ageing or various disease processes.
I combine this with the development and use of novel behavioural tasks designed to probe aspects of recognition memory across different stimuli types.
My PhD thesis focused on the application of advanced imaging techniques to investigate neurophysiological changes in healthy ageing, and their associations to changes in recognition memory performance.
I am currently working on developing clinically feasible imaging protocols for the acquisition of Diffusion Orientation Complexity (DOC) data, as well as the application of radiomic texture analysis across a variety of clinical populations.
I specialise in diffusion weighted and structural MRI, from conventional measures such as tissue volume, cortical thickness, fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity through to more advanced measures such as fractal dimension, neurite orientation, dispersion and density imaging (NODDI), and the aforementioned DOC.
I lead the Memory and Microstructure Lab, based within the Division of Neuroscience and Experimental Psychology here in Manchester. Our focus leads on from my interests in advanced medical imaging techniques and applications to clinical populations, alongside the use of neuropsychological and novel behavioural tests tapping features of recognition memory. We have strong links to the Memory Research Unit within DNEP.
We are currently running a number of studies, including:
Investigating volumetric and diffusion-based measures of microstructure in the medial temporal lobe in organic amnesia
Application of radiomic texture analysis of T1-weighted and diffusion weighted data, and associations to recollection and familiarity based memory processes
Use of tract-based-spatial-statistics (TBSS) to explore novel measures of microstructure change in Fibromyalgia and Parkinson's disease
Development of clinically orientated imaging protocols for DOC acquisition
